JPJB had married Joan in August 1947; they moved to a much larger house in Stanley Avenue, Wallasey Village, in 1952-3. They had two daughters and a son (myself), born in the 1950s. He lost both his much-admired grandfather Joseph, and his father-in-law John in 1953.

He bought a series of caravans in North Wales in this period, before taking his first canal boat holiday in 1963, after which he sold the last caravan. He and his father, with another man, became partners in the firm of H J Boughey & Son, which became much more successful in the 1960s in Wallasey. In 1964 he bought a canal boat, and moved, again in Wallasey Village, to what would become his last home.
